Explore a little deeper below the surface of the Derwent Valley’s idyllic countryside and you might find yourself catching a glimpse of our not so shy but still very wild local resident; the platypus.
With “the bill of a duck, the body of an otter, and the tail of a beaver”, this evolutionary relic has a long history of confounding humans and puzzling scientists.
Unlike other iconic Tasmanian species like the pesky possum or the ever present wallaby, platypuses are becoming increasingly difficult to spot. Active at night and living much of their lives underwater or within the comfort of their hidden riverside burrows, their habits are the opposite of their human observers.
But right here on the edge of Tasmania’s Western Wilds is a stretch of protected river environment where; if we travel quietly and respectfully, we have an exceptionally good chance of spotting platypus in their natural habitat.
Our 3-hour fully guided tour on sit-on-top kayaks is the perfect way to explore the river environment and experience the rare opportunity to watch wild platypus thriving.

- Wild platypus spotting (although we provide the best possible opportunities to spot platypus, we cannot guarantee sightings on every tour). We have been running platypus tours for five seasons and have a success rate of around 95%.
- Pick up from Gretna or Mount Field National Park.

We are frequent kayakers back home, but wanted to explore remote southwest Tasmanian wilderness areas by bushwalking with an experienced guide. Liam of Tassie Bound was happy to oblige. His original plan was to guide us to the summit of Mount Anne, but 100kph winds made that impossible. So instead we explored the Growling Swallet and hiked the Pinnacles off the road to Strathgordon. Liam was professional, well-prepared, extremely personable, knowledgeable, and safe. We would never have found the first trail without him. His beautifully restored old Land Rover is part of the ambiance of the trip itself. Next dream trip: to return with my trail-running friends and pound out some extreme bushwalking. I know Liam would be up to the challenge.
AMAZING! Highly reccommend. We (2 couples) did the twilight platypus tour and absolutely loved it! Liam was such a great host, remembered all of our names and made us all feel so welcome and comfortable. We saw about 10 platypus, and stopped for a wonderful cheese platter during the trip – perfect! Liam took loads of photos that we easily just grabbed off Facebook once he uploaded at no charge. Oh, and you don’t need to be an experienced kayaker either! Great great great!
What an incredible experience. Liam picked the 3 of us up from Lake Pedder Lodge. Travelled to Teds beach where we launched off from. Liam ran through safety tips and sent us off on a little walk ..meanwhile he unloaded the kayaks. Set off kayaking on Lake Peddar. MAgic Day. It was like a mill Pond. The 4 of us silently glided on the lake marvelling at the beauty and peacefulness. Paddled to a small quartz beach and had a bite to eat. Great wrap made by Liam from home grown and locally sourced food. Special! Brownies were a huge hit, Fiona’s secret recipe!!! Time disappeared into the beauty that surrounded us and we hardly noticed the 3 hours as they slipped by. This is a must do if you are anywhere near Lake Pedder …even worth a 2 hour drive to experience the splendour of this area, Liam very knowledgeable and passionate about the area
This is one of the best family adventure tours we’ve ever done! We were first time kayakers but the Tassie Bound team made us feel relaxed and confident right from the start. Delicious lunch provided, catering to dietary requirements. They make such an effort to personalise the experience for each group extending our tour because of the lovely weather.
